IREX RS3 #509 (S. J. Groves) at Hornell

At the Erie Lackawanna works at Hornell, NY on Sunday evening September 23rd, 1973 . This photo was taken while returning from a NMRA Regional convention in Ithaca, NY. 

The locomotive was owned by S.J.Groves and numbered 509. Groves was the prime contractor in the construction of I-280 in Morris and Essex counties in New Jersey. Information kindly supplied by Todd Roberts of Rochester, NY.

The loco was built by Alco in October 1951 (builder's number 79245) as Minnesota Transfer 200, it then became Groves 509, sold to Kodak Park RR in 1973 as number 5, to Interlake Steel in 1979 numbered 19 and finally preserved by the Illinois Railway Museum.
