UK Class 421 were introduced in 1964 to replaced the original 1933 Brighton line electric express units (6-PAN & 6-PUL). These were 4 car units with 4 first class compartments at each end. The Connex South Central Class 421/4 has one driving trailer composite re-classified to all second and the other one is reduced to 3 First class compartments. The compartment with the outside door is the downgraded one but still retains the 6 seat configuration. The unit has a single intermediate motor brake second rated at 740kw, 992 hp and a maximum speed of 90 mph, 145 km/h.

Connex South Central 421/4 1847 departs southbound from East Croydon on Tuesday June 8, 1999. This view shows the driving trailer composite 76630 with only 3 of the original 4 First class compartments. The two red roller blinds in the headcode panel serve as end of train markers.
