The funicular railway was opened in 1891 using water to add weight to the upper car which then descended and hauled the waterless lower car up. The water was then dumped from the lower car, more water added to the upper car and the process continued. It was closed during WW1 until 1932 when it was regauged and converted to electricity and it ran that way until 1965. It was closed for 20 years because of land slides in the area and reopened in 1985.
It operates as part of the Praha transit system.
