The world's longest automated light rapid transit system
has a length of 49.5 kilometres with some sections elevated and some
running below ground in the city centre. The system runs on standard
gauge without drivers. The first line was built for use at the Expo 86
world fair.
Vancouver Skytrain units 001-136 were built by UTDC from 1984 to 1991 &
137-156 were built by Bombardier in Kingston, Ontario and operate on
standard gauge. The design of the first units were based upon the
Scarborough RT units but are fully automated (without driver).
The 2nd series of cars were built by Bombardier with prototypes 201 &
202 built in Kingston, ON in 2000 and the production units (203-260)
built in Burnaby, BC in 2001 & 2002. |
