The SBB RBe 540 driving motor units are second class and can operate with a variable number of trailers and a Steuerwagen. The prototypes were built in 1959 and the production members of the class were built between 1963 & 1966. At the time of construction, they were more powerful than the mainline electric locomotives of Re 4/4 I. Originally classified as RBe 4/4, these all 2nd class units seat 64 passengers and are rated at 1988 kW, 2720 hp and have a top speed of 125 km/h, 78 mph.
