O.V.S. Bulleid of the Southern Railway designed this 40 member class during the second World War. They featured revolutionary design features and were built without frills to save on materials and reduce the locomotive weight.
On the August Bank Holiday weekend of 1995, the lone surviving Bulleid Austerity was in service. The loco is on loan from the NRM to the Bulleid Society.
