#21C123 ex-Southern Railway 4-6-2 Express Passenger Locomotive

Michael Taylor

O.V.S. Bulleid of the Southern Railway designed this class. These engines were lighter version of his "Merchant Navy" class 4-6-2s and were designed to operate over lightly laid secondary routes where they replaced older 4-4-0 & 2-6-0 locomotives. The air-smoothed design could be passed through carriage washing plants and made a big publicity splash when they appeared just after the war. They had 3 cylinders and the valve gear was operated by chains in an oil bath.

21C123 waits at Sheffield Park Station prior to its departure to Horsted Keynes in June 1976. This view shows off well the speed-effect of the 3 yellow lines on the locomotive and tender.
