#3217 ex-GWR 4-4-0 Passenger Engine

In June 1973, 3217 doubleheads a northbound train with a Brighton Terrier. The photo was taken on the 1 in 75(1.3% grade) climb of Freshfield bank.

Known as the Dukedogs these locomotives were a result of building in 1936 using parts from the Bulldog 4-4-0 & the Duke 4-4-0s. They ran mostly on the Cambrian Coast line in Wales. 3217 is named "Earl of Berkley" but the names were transferred to Castle class 4-cylinders 4-6-0s which were felt to be more appropriate to recognize these distinguished gentlemen.
