#21C123 ex-Southern Railway 4-6-2 Express Passenger Locomotive

O.V.S. Bulleid of the Southern Railway designed this class. These engines were lighter version of his "Merchant Navy" class 4-6-2s and were designed to operate over lightly laid secondary routes where they replaced older 4-4-0 & 2-6-0 locomotives. The air-smoothed design could be passed through carriage washing plants and made a big publicity splash when they appeared just after the war. They had 3 cylinders and the valve gear was operated by chains in an oil bath.

Bulleid Pacific 21C123 makes an explosive departure from Sheffield Park Station in June 1976. It was the first trip of the morning and the cylinder drain cocks are left open for a longer time so that any water in the 3 cylinders will be exhausted.
