Xm1/2 51 at Appenzell

The Appenzeller is a metre gauge railway, electrified at 1500 volts. Their workshops are in Gais which is also a junction for lines running to Altstätten, St Gallen & Appenzell.
This unit is classified as Xm1/2 (X work, m diesel with 1 of the 2 axles powered) and is powered by a 75 kW, 100 hp diesel engine producing a top speed of 45 km/h, 28 mph. It was produced in 1962 by rebuilding a 3rd class electric railcar (Appenzell Weissbad Wasserauen Bahn number 3) which dated from 1912.
