The Class 641 is a joint project of the DB, SNCF and Alstom for a
single car diesel unit capable of working steeply graded, low capacity
rail lines. There are 40 of these diesel hydraulics in service with the
DB. It is equipped with 2 257kW diesel engines driving the inside axles in
both 4-wheel trucks. 514 total kW, 690 hp with a maximum speed of 120
km/h, 75 mph. These are very long units with an overall length of 28.9m
almost 95 feet long. Seating capacity is 8 first class and 72 second class
(17 of these being tip up seats).
641 002-1 was built by Alstom in March 2002.
