There were originally 60 locomotives of type SD50F built by GMD in London between April 1985 and July 1987. They are fitted with the "draper Taper" full width carbodies. They are classified as GF-636a & GF-636b although they are downrated from 3600 hp to 3200 hp, 2387 kW. They are also geared to 70 mph but restricted to 65, 105 km/h.
