E8A #829

Hornell, NY on a September 23rd, 1973 evening. This photo was taken while returning from a NMRA Regional convention in Ithaca, NY . #829 was built in March 1951.

There were 4 of these magnificent ex-express passenger locomotives in the yard. They were 2250 hp units riding on 6 wheels trucks ( A1A-A1A configuration) with the outer axles powered and the inside axle on each truck as an idler to carry some of the loco weight. These locos had been re-geared to work freights. Originally Erie RR #829, then Erie Lackawanna #829 and later Conrail 4018.
