Class 4-CIG Electric Multiple Unit

4-CIG 1711 approaching Berwick

Built from 1964 onwards  these 4 car units have one non-driving motor unit, a trailer second and 2 non-motor driving units. Maximum speed is 90 mph, 145 km/h and have 4 185 kW motors rated at 740kW, 992 hp. They pick up current via a 3rd rail at 750 V dc. Class 421/3 use the older mark 4 motor bogies while class 421/4 use mark 6 design  .

Originally designated 4CIG by Southern Region, these 4 car express units became class 421. This is unit 421711 on a westbound Ore to Brighton working passing Berwick signal box on Thursday June 10th, 1999.  The signal box was being repainted into Southern Railway colours with replica signs and nameboards. The line to the east was still being worked by bell code and absolute block from this 1879 Saxby & Farmer box, as it had been for over a 120 years while that to the west to Lewes was Track Circuit block worked.
