Engine #1

Michael Taylor

The Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway was completed in 1903 and opened in 1904 as a 3' 8'' gauge railway (the gauge of 2 second hand Porter locos) to portage between Peninsula Lake and Lake of Bays. In 1947 the loco needed replacement and a pair of 3'6" gauge locos were purchased. It was deemed to be more cost effective to regauge the line rather than convert the engines, so the line was regauged and operated that way from 1948.. This is the second engine #1 being a 1926 MLW 17 ton 0-4-0ST.

These photos were taken on a 1958 vacation trip to Algonquin Park and to find the railway that was the subject of an article published in the Meccano Magazine in 1955 or 1956 which I had read when I lived in England.  Taken on a box camera using Kodak 120 type B&W film, scanned from a print. This is an enlargement to show loco detail.
