© Michael Taylor In the late1960s and early 1970s, GO (Government Ontario) Transit used single deck cars for both locomotive hauled services and some self propelled off-peak services.A Saturday afternoon in September 1973 finds 1966 built GP40TC (Toronto Commuter) hauling 3 single level cars into Oakville. This loco carries the purple/white/green livery that was originally chosen for these units. The GP40TCs were sold to Amtrak in 1988 and #9804 became #196. The TC version was a stretched GP40 using a SD40 frame to provide space for an auxiliary diesel engine to power a 500 kW alternator for heating and cooling the passenger cars. |
