The MLW built M-636 diesels were based upon the Alco C-636 diesel electrics. CP had 44 built in 1969 & 1970 numbered 4700 to 4743. Originally rated at 3600 hp, CP downgraded them to 3300 hp, 2462 kW. Top speed was 75. The last was retired in 1995.

M636 #4712 leads RS-10 8475 on a westbound freight past Newcastle, ON in February 1974.
